Elk NetworkRMEF Members Track Down Elk in West Virginia

Conservation | October 18, 2018

On September 21st, 2018 the Southern WV Chapter of the RMEF attended one of the first ever elk viewing tours in Logan County. West Virginia.

Lead by West Virginia State Park Naturalist Lauren Cole, the four-hour tour consisted of an introductory seminar on elk, elk habitat and the re-establishment of a wild elk herd in West Virginia.

The group then headed up to the new 25,000-acre Tomblin Wildlife Management Area where we heard many bugles and sighted about a dozen elk. We watched one young 5×5 bull put on quite a show for us for about 10 minutes at about 100 yards.

With a herd just under 100 animals, West Virginia is planning a banner future for elk in the Mountain State.
